Women, the saviors of this planet?

Will empowerment of women, or their control over their futures and lives save this planet from destruction? Intriguing as it may sound, there might be a rationale behind this relationship between women and environment.

With more and more women slowly yet steadily winning the war to control their fertility with better access to family planning, this may be a long-term solution for the world of nearly 6.1 billion and overstretched resources.

It is estimated that by 2050, 4.2 billion people will be living in countries that cannot meet the daily requirement of 50 liters of water per person to meet basic needs. With human encroachment, and vast scale depletion of rain forests, the impact on biodiversity is crucial, thereby contributing to global warming and rise in sea levels.

And now let us focus our rapt attention to miles of pristine beaches, white sands and blue sky. If we thought such are stuff that dreams are made of, very soon this waking reality will be a dream. That is what Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of the Maldives, asserted in his rather startling revelation of moving the nation somewhere else.

Relocating a 300,000 odd population to the shores of India, Sri Lanka or Australia may seem like a grim scenario, however the steadily rising sea levels tell a different story. Made up of 1200 islands, Maldives holds the record for the country with the lowest high point on earth.

Sea levels in the area have risen by 20cms in the past century and United Nations affirms that there will be a further rise of 58cms by 2100. The future of bare breeze-block huts faced with the vagaries of nature poised within a stone’s throw from the luxurious Kandooma resort hangs in several unresolved fragile questions.

Could we then look at women as avatars in a newly defined role, still wearing the clichéd robe of the most powerful consumer force in the world? Women spend on an average $.85 of every dollar in the marketplace. Switching to eco-friendly products and services can help use less packaging, save energy and water and protect rain forests.

Sometimes the small scale solution to serious concerns are in a cloth bag in the kitchen, or conscious decisions such as discarding plastic or taking a flight of steps rather than an elevator, however that momentary decision is decisive in its long term impact.

Women play a major role in the house. If they decide to quit the usage of the product that pollutes the environment, it would bring a significant improvement in global warming. Denying to use plastic is one major step that can help a lot for the future.

Thanks for taking an interest in my article Chinky. In a larger perspective its all of us responsible everyday in polluting the environment bit by bit. It takes a few simple conscious decisions to make a significant difference, however the awareness is crucial.

Not even that...using eco friendly products, taking interest in gardening and planting trees or kitchen gardens in the premises of their houses is also a good idea. This will keep both their family and the environment, healthy.

I agree..there are several ways of slowing down the rate of increase of greenhouse gases: less flying, driving, carpooling, eating less red meat, using energy efficient flourescent bulbs and also planting trees in a specific way.An estimate quotes 40 trees=1ton of carbon dioxide sequestered every year. And all these is within our means. Regards.

Why only women... these things should be taught in the schools to the children to not to pollute the environment and teachers should make sure that they follow it within the school. This way the children will develop a habit to keep surroundings clean and pollution free. And the future of the Earth is dependent on the young generation.

I agree with you Andri..this was just a perspective. The onus is on everyone to contribute to the best of their capacity and it can all start with simple education at home and at schools. The consciousness and awareness is crucial and the message can be dissipated in very simple words and presentations.

I think each one of us hold some responsibility towards our planet. Having less no of children will help in consuming less resources which will help them last long. Global warming is a serious issue and we need to put our individual efforts in order to bring the Earth back to its normal state.

Blaming men for all problems of the world and appropriating their goodness is what feminists are experts at and have been doing it since 100 years now. All wrong things happening, men are to be blamed. All good things that men do, attribute it to women.

Women are NOT the saviours of this planet as much as men are not. It is to deny the weaknesses of women. Women are as criminal as men when they get a chance to do it. Today’s women are an example of how criminal women can become. Dowry laws, domestic violence laws, are misused and extortion takes place in courts itself. Give me Rs 1 Crore or I will file a dowry case.

Women saviours? My Foot!

Hi Rohan,

Thanks for your comment!While i fully appreciate cronstructive criticism, this was a narrowminded myopic perspective, that i must say was almost like a diatribe.
First of all, it is a fact that men are saviors as much as women..this was purely a perspective, and on 2 grounds, spending indices of women and their ability to bear children, as well as small yet significant differences that we can make just by discarding a plastic bag or recycling products in our day to day life.
Secondly the question tag in the topic clearly indicates that it is just a suggestion or a perspective and not an assertion, clearly open to interpretation.

Your personal vendatta against women, or personal opinion, has nothing to do with the perspective i had. While i am fully aware of women asking for dowry or their extortionist behavior, i am not supporting the cause, nor have i raised the concern in the article.While i appreciate the fact that this is citizen journalism, and i appreciate you having take time to read, i must say you have lost the whole plot here.

As expected, your paranoia got the better of you once more that you were not able to resist the almost maniacal urge to promote your misogynistic campaign.

Your pathetically misplaced comment does not belong to this very logically explained post. It’s ridiculous how you promptly launch your anti-women rant at any post tagged with ’woman.’

@Anandita,

I didn’t lose track of what you meant through this article. But your title is completely misplaced and an insult to men. It gives an impression that men do all the nasty things and women don’t. Environmental pollution is created by all. So, my response is mainly to the title of this well-meaning article on environment. I also criticize your first para where you refer to ”Women empowerment” as though women alone are capable of saving the planet.

@Anandita,

I must say that your article’s title is myopic although the contents are well meant. It gives an impression that men are destroying the planet and women are saviours. So, my response earlier was to counter that. Men, by no means, are saviours of this planet; nor are women.

I do not have any personal vendetta against any woman or women. I definately have a problem with misandry that is being preached in society in all possible forms and in all ways. How would you like a similar article being published with the title, ”Men, the saviours of this planet”?

@Grace,

I do not have the obsession that you claim I have. My response was primarily at the title of the article which is offending me. I am not a woman hater by no means. But I don’t tolerate hatred of men are men shown as destructive species or women shown as morally superior to men. Sorry, I will not!

I am not have the obsession that feminists have - the pathological urge to hate and preach hatred towards the opposite sex.

This article is indeed good except for the title. The title could have been better presented. It would give a different meaning.

Lastly, I don’t and never ever launch any anti-woman tirade. I always work towards self-respect of men.

People like you can only show the feet to women. You can never place them equal to men. People like you are the responsible for women’s miserable condition. You are the true followers of Manu.

@Nitesh,

It is people like you who have been responsible for thousands of men committing suicide due to feminist-Talibanist laws such as 498A and DV act. Men like you are the real murderers behind those suicides. You support suicide of men due to such laws. While the men suffer, fellows like you keep laughing at it. I am no supporter of Manu but with men like you around, I think Manu was indeed right. Miserable condition of women? What is the condition of men then???

I do understand the plot and perspective of your post but people like Rohan can’t accept the equal status for women. His criticism is not a positive one. He is justifying the patriarchal set up of society.

@Nitesh,

Is the title of this article adhere to principles of equality? Would you take it lightly if it was the other way around?

’Patriarchy’, the favourite whipping boy of sex-starved male feminists is again beign whipped for no reason. yet, it is the same favourite whipping boy called ”Patriarchy” that gets a royal treatment from male-feminists like you when it suits women and when it suits YOU. Get all the laws amended to make them gender-neutral. Let women start paying alimony to men. Let no woman get married unless she is in a cosy job. Let women take the responsibility for their rights. Guys like you wouldn’t want that to happen. You are into women pamperment and NOT empowerment. Infact, men also need to be liberated and empowered as much as women!

I agree that the everyday operationalization of an ecological campaign can target the female sector better. But that is not saying that men are exempt from saving this planet. They equally litter it so they should equally clean up.

Why target women more? For the simple reason that females in the household generally have the consumer decision with everyday household products, and these are the products that are numerous and heavily packaged.

Dearest Grace,

Thank you so much for that valid point that you have raised and rising to the ocassion. I have nothing but words of appreciation. I really stop to wonder at the narrow vision of those who lose the essence of the plot completely and make it a personal agenda to get back at women for whatever personal reasons that they might have.

Thanks once again, my friend.

I agree, Anindita.

To save this planet, we should rise above politics, whether it be politicking or petty gender politics. These are the blunders on the road we would do well without.

In the first place, nature doesn’t know politics or gender. But what it is is FINITE.

Kudos to your timely and more appropriate post. Keep ’em coming!

Hi Grace,
Thanks for the inspiration and support. I write about concerns or topics that i am passionate about, and believe that Citizen Journalism offers a great forum for voicing common place opinion, such as mine. While there will always be elements of distraction, as you rightly said, we need to rise above pettiness and make a small contribution in our small way. After all each grain of sand is important in the scheme of the vast stretch of beach.

Thanks

Once again Rohan, you have missed the plot.You missed the question mark, that was indicative of just a perspective and not an assertion of any sort.I dont think the title is an insult to men at all.In the post, there is no mention or accusation that men do not do noble things and women do it at all times.Hence the accusation is a figment of your imagination.This is a perspective to show that awareness and empowerment in all sections of soceity amongst women could be a possible redemption, if seen in the right perspective.And btw, if you had a similar post as ”men being the saviors?” i would read it with objectivity and not launch myself at the mere mention of ”men”..and am not a feminist either. I just posted a small perspective.

@Aanndita,

Don’t you feel that your choice of words in the title could have been a bit better? That is what I am saying. A question mark or no question mark, the message has gone through. We have seen enough of articles that bash up men. Though the content of the article is indeed noble, the title could have been better with a better choice of words. How would it sound it it was something like, ”Women can take the initiative to save the earth” or ”Calling on all women to save the planet”.

Nice article
What men don’t understand is they made the mess of the world and haven’t done mutch to clean it up ,but with their drive to find more ways of killing their own species it won’t get any better any time soon
The world has over 6 billion humans but as seen through history men only see themselves 3 billion and woman being the good servants of man following their gods and most of their crazy inventions and their thoughts on life and life after death
I will guarantee that if we let woman clean up this messy world that in a short time as history goes the world would be cleaner and a better place with less killing but more hugging

@ Wayne,

Do you even deserve a reply?

Just one point - if men have invented some crazy stuff, let women stop using the Internet, the Computers, mobile phones, cars etc. as all these are crazy inventions of men too.

BTW, where is your bank account details? My women out here are now laughing at me. You yourself told me that you want to get screwed. So, get me the details fast!

@Anandita,

Though I am in complete agreement with your well-meaning article [Except the title], the attitude of wayne illogical is what I am basically referring to. Your article’s title seemed to summarise in one sentence what wayne illogical has expressed in this comment above. Blame the men for environmental problems, bash them up for perceived oppression of women and call upon women to do the cleaning saying that they are morally superior to men.

This is what made me respond to your article.

You know Rohan, i hate to say, take a break and spend your energies for a better and more noble cause. This was just a post, not a rally of sorts. You have taken it to new heights of verbal abuse. You deserve a good break and a new look/perspective at self respect of men, as you rightly mentioned.Give us all a break from this menaingless and endless tirade. You do not agree with my title, i accept it, thanks for your gracious comment and end less time spent on invective. Regards

@Anandita,

I hate to say this to you too but whenever men’s rights are taken up in today’s rotten feminist system, people give excuses. Have I abused anybody on my own? Was it not because of provocation? You get back what you give.

I think women’s rights activists really need a break now. Your article’s title is a reflection of the reality today and the brainwash they have done.

BTW, you cannot call my comments meaningless because you haven’t commented on my references to wayne logic’s statements. You seem to agree with him.

@Arvind,

I already told Anandita that I agree with her article and not the title. It is the title which is offending. She has told me that she didn’t intend it that way. Yet she has chosen not to comment on Wayne logic’s anti-male statement.

Yes, for feminists and most people today, a ”Noble Cause” is all about supporting unreasonable female terrorism such as these cases below.

So its not even worth replying once again becasue I don’t get any reply anyway.

Your narrow mindedness created by your own sexual frustrations cannot be solved by any dialogue. It needs REAL PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE.
